1. Is known for their absurdly long words
For example, the longest word in the German language contains 79 letters: “Donaudampfschiffahrtselektrizitätenhauptbetriebswerkbauunterbeamtengesellschaft” which means Association of subordinate officials of the head office management of the Danube steamboat electrical services.
2. 130 million speakers around the world
It is an official language in 7 countries and is the most widely spoken mother language in EU.
3. Words have three genders
It has third gender that is referred to as “neutur" for words that are neither masculine nor feminine.
4. Time is stated in reference to the upcoming hour
If you ask for time and someone replies you with “halb fünf", which translates to “half five", it’s not 5:30, it means 4:30 as in German, you report time by counting the minutes to the next hour.
5. Shares a lot of vocabulary with English
Share over 60% of their vocabulary.
6. Contains words that don’t have an equivalent in other languages
For example, “fremdschämen” refers to shame that is felt on another person’s behalf.
7. All nouns are capitalized
In English, only the proper nouns like names are capitalized.
8. Has different dialects
